San Fran SX this weekend!

Saturday 30 January 2010

Well after just 3 rounds of the 2010 season, it is fair to say we are in a position nobody could of predicted. Chad Reed crashed out of the first round and then broke his hand in a clash with James Stewart at round 2. James Stewart has been completely overshadowed by former Lites Champion Ryan Dungey, who dominantly leads the series in what has to be the most succesful year ever in the Opens class for a first timer. Stewart has now recieved surgery on some kind of wrist injury and will miss the San Fran round of SX. Finally Aussie Dan Reardon, who off the back of a strong result in the Aussie SX series and came into the first round with great form and on a new team, whiskey throttled over a berm before the first race even started, leaving him with an injured shoulder and really bad concussion that is still lingering. We can't believe the way things have fallen so far, and although it leaves all of our previous hopes and excitement for the series dead in the water, it has surprisingly opened up a new side of the series, one that involves none of the former big guns and watches all of the up and comer guys battle it out for their chance at Supercross glory!

San Fransisco sees the Supercross series drop gates in less than 24 hours, and unfortunately the city has not prepared the best racing weather. It has been pouring rain non-stop and threatening the perfectly sculpted track. Organisers have the track well covered so hopefully the rain backs off and we see some great racing either way.

In Australia, there is no LIVE coverage at all of the event, except for live timing and scoring, which kind of seems like you are waiting for someone to morse code you the results, but if you are a true SX fan then you won't mind it. You can follow that HERE.

Or if you are online with either Facebook or Twitter, for more detailed results you can simply follow Unit pages HERE or HERE.

In regards to Unit athlete Dan Reardon's return, we were told his team would be making a decision today and hopefully we will see him on the track!

Red Bull X-Fighters Announcements

Wednesday 27 January 2010

As we mentioned earlier in the week, the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour will be a 6 stop series this year with the final locations released today!

Unfortunately for Australia we have missed on featuring one of the rounds, but the locations selection should all be EPIC and produce some truly amazing and ground breaking FMX. As well as the regular stops of the tour at Mexico City and Madrid (Spain), this year's series will also be held in the shadow of the Egyptian pyramids at Giza (Egypt), the world-famous Red Square and Kremlin in Moscow (Russia), return to the Battersea Power Station in London (England), where last year's finale was held, before heading to the Eternal City, Rome (Italy) for the final round.

Another big event for this year was going to be the Red Bull ranking session, where 26 riders were going to have the chance to battle it out for a spot on the tour. But non-stop bad weather in the Californian area has forced Red Bull to scrap the sessions and change the selection format slightly. Instead of only the top 4 from last years series going through automatically, now the top 6 ranked riders will fill the first spots and they include Nate Adams, Robbie Maddison, Eigo Sato, Mat Rebaud, Danni Torres and our very own Levi Sherwood. 6 specially selected riders from the original ranking session rundown will battle it out for 4 more regular spots on the tour, and finally there will be 2 wildcard entrants at each round. This is a bit dissapointing for all the guys lining up for their shot at FMX glory, but Red Bull were definitely on the right track, and I am sure next year we will get to see the full ranking session go down!

The final tour dates are as follows....

Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour 2010
Apr 16 – Mexico City, MEX
May 14 – Giza, EGY
Jun 26 – Moscow, RUS
Jul 22-23 – Madrid, ESP
Aug 14 – London, UK
Oct 1 – Rome, ITA

Kovarik wins again!

Wednesday 27 January 2010

(Image from Rotorburn, by Natarlie)

It seems the National Championship belt wasn't enough for Chris Kovarik, this weekend coming out with speed at Shepparton for round 2 of the National Championship Downhill series.

Chris and his Wife Claire were on fire all weekend in their respective Downhill categories, both taking wins! In his first run Chris was the only rider of the day to go under the 2 minute mark, and by astounding 5 seconds. In his second run, Chris managed to better his first run time by over 2 seconds and ended up a very comfortable 4 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor.

Chris' domination of the series so far is a testament to the Aussie Downhill legends enthusiasm and dedication to his sport.

In other great Unit team news from Shepparton, Caroline Buchanan has also continued a stellar run of victories, with a comfortable first place in the womens 4X. Caroline now holds a strong lead in the Aussie National 4X series.

Stay tuned each week for more results and updates from the Unit MTB team.

Farm Jam Brett Frew Update + Pics

Tuesday 26 January 2010

Brett from the Southern Freeriders has been hard at work over the past few months preparing his farm for the 2010 Farm Jam. This years Jam is shaping up huge and is being backed by Red Bull and many other big corporate partners, so things are sure to be amazing. Brett sent through some bloody sweet photos of the riding and progress that you can check out now at the Unit Facebook or Myspace. This is what Brett has to say about everything going on down there!

"Hey, Brett here from the deep south of NZ.

I am riding a lot and the best bike I have ever ridden is my Black Market Mob, 22.25 TT made up with 2010 Marzocchi DJ1, Gravity bars and stem, Atomlab cranks, sprockets, pedals and wheels, Wideopen brakes and ODI lockons. It is amazing!

Things are going very well and its mid season for us bike fanatics. The dirt jumps down here in the lower half of the south island NZ are simply unreal. We have a growing number of talented jumpers around here and nightly sessions on the jumps makes up for the nightly digging we do in the spring rain.

I wanted to say thanks for the continued support and send u a lil peep as to what I have been riding lately. Caleb Smith at Spoke magazine is one of my biggest supporters and I really appreciate what he does for me, he is an amazing photographer and the mag is world class. There are a couple snaps from the mag here which goes out 3 monthly throughout the country and I dont know any bikers that dont read it. Cheers Caleb. There may be another photo in a Black Market ad coming issue which is a great shot of a huge step-up 180 where I was towed in at 60km/h, so I am very much looking forward to seeing it in print.

My brother Dan and I are currently organising the Farm Jam 2010 and its coming along nicely, if its bike dirt jumping that is interesting to you, keep March 6th free and come join the fun. Our blog will have the full Farm Jam run down posted at southernfreeriders.blogspot.com

Special thanks to my sponsors Wideopen distributors, Unit clothing, Adidas Eyewear, Pro-Tec helmets, Dakine, Atomlab, Gravity

Cheers
Brett"

Red Bull X-Fighters 2010 Big News

Monday 25 January 2010

Red Bull X-Fighters has without a doubt become the biggest and most succesful series in FMX around the world. Last year saw even more international riders attend, new locations and bigger crowds then ever before. 2009 also saw judging and scoring in FMX get even more questioned and doubted, as the the worlds best riders pushed the limits of the sport even further.

Well, in great news for the sport of FMX and it's future, Red Bull has announced a full overhawl of it's X-Fighters judging format and criteria. A clinic of the worlds most important judges, athlete managers and riders was held at Red Bull HQ, to discuss and brainstorm ways in which judging can be made clearer, results more accurate and most importantly, riders feeling like they got a fair score and result at the end of each event. The clinic sounds like a huge success so far, with nothing held back, and all dirt layes out on the table.

You can read the full story over at EXPN, and we can all expect to see the official changes really soon.

In other big news, it sounds like Red Bull are planning 6 stops this year, expanding the X-Fighters empire into more countries, with more rounds. The locations and dates are supposedly being released this Tuesday, so stay tuned to the Unit Blog for all that news, and lets all hope Australia gets a spot on the list! There will also be a qualifying / ranking session coming up very soon, which gives every rider from around the globe, the chance to be apart of the 2010 X-Fighters Competition. The top 4 riders from last years series all get a free pass to the 2010 series, and those guys are Nate Adams, Robbie Maddison, Eigo Sato and Mat Rebaud. That leaves 6 more spots for the top riders from the ranking session, as well as 2 wild-card entries at every round, for the most outstanding riders at the time who aren't on the regular season.

With so much going on with X-Fighters, we can't wait for it all to unravel, and the 2010 Champions to be crowned. This year will see the competition truly become the worlds premier FMX series.

Caroline B Signs with Commencal Bikes

Sunday 24 January 2010

Off the back of her 2nd National MTB Round Win in the Womens 4X division, Caroline Buchanan has officially announced she will be riding for Commencal Bikes. The new bike sponsor comes as a reward for Caroline's extreme dedication and great results across both disciplines of Mountain Biking and BMX Racing.

Australia's Commencal distributor Bill Phillips commented that "Commencal have spoken about looking at possible young riders for the future that COMMENCAL could support and bring into the Family. Caroline fitted the characteristics: a strong rider, a great competitor, professional in the way she approaches sport and competition, with a focus on her goals and direction. When I first met Caroline I knew immediately she was the person we were looking for. She spoke easily, expressed her self capably and confidently. She is multi disciplined and skilled both in MTB and BMX. Moreover, she told me about her achievements, which are many, her goals for the future, her passion for women in our sport and being a role model for younger girls."

Back to news on Caroline's 2nd National 4X victory in as many weeks, Caroline commented on the amazing track prepared by the Greater Shepparton organisers. The hot and dry conditions made racing tough, but Caroline got a great start and lead from start to finish. With a commanding series lead only after 2 rounds, Thredbo will see the next National round in 2 weeks time.

In the meantime Caroline will be running an all girls coaching clinic at Mt Buller, Victoria. Congratulations again on the great results, and new team Caroline.

Kain Saul Panama Trip

Saturday 23 January 2010

After around 40 hours of flying within 4 days i can say my recent trip to Panama was a fun one. It started off with a 13 hour flight to LA then a 4 hour flight to Atlanta then another 4 hour flight to Panama. All the crew waited till i arrived then we went straight to a place for dinner that was owned by one of the riders (Rudy Waller). The next morning we all got up early and went to a work shop and put all our bikes together which took all day as we had to wait on parts and other things to happen. The work shop was right on the Panama canal which was awsome seeing the biggest ships i'd ever
seen cruise down the canal. Things were a little awkward having Chuck Corothers and my self there, cause of the whole Harley flip thing. We got talking about it and everything was cool, he's actually a really cool guy.

Day of the show everyone got up early and went to the venue wich was indoors and the set up was good. We didn't ride 'til the afternoon cause of some problems at the venue which wasn't a problem cause we got to watch the drift cars and stunt road bikes do their thing. So it was time to ride, i rode for about 15 minutes and my bike over heated and i had to sit that show out but definitly made up for it in the next show. I met alot of cool people in Panama, all the riders were top blokes and i can definitly say ill be going back there.

Jaie Toohey Bike Check

Thursday 21 January 2010

Jaie Toohey is currently off the bike, courtesy some major knee surgery at the end of 09'. So what does a pro BMX rider do when they have way to much time on their hands? Build up a crazy cool new bike, so as soon as they step back on the pedals, they are rollin' in style. This is what Jaie had to say about his new bike...

"I thought to my self, I'm gona build a new bike that's just out there! All weird different colours. I wanted to do every single part a different fluro colour, but there wasn't enough colours out there, so i just picked out all these crazy colours for each different part and we built it up. I reckon it came out pretty dam good, it's bit out there, but i definitely like it. Just whish i could ride it haha. Anyways hope you all like it."

Cams Jam only 2 weeks away!

Wednesday 20 January 2010

This past weekend i was down in Mulwala for a show called the freestyle sports expo. I have been doing this show for the past 5 years and it's a lot of fun. Cam Pianta and Tim Fountain also rode the show with me. We had a sweet little dirt jump setup and the crowds are always a lot of fun. Tim Fountain had a amazing streak of bad luck on the way to and home from the event but rode awesome all weekend so it was a good day. Attached is a photo from the show that my mate Mitch Stafford took.. Check it out! Since I got back from the show I've been digging my butt off building a big new truck jump that will blow your mind when it's done. Jam in 2 weeks so stay tuned for more!!!

Caroline + Rhys race reports!

Tuesday 19 January 2010

As you probably already heard, the Unit MTB team seriously dominated the Nationals on the weekend in Adelaide. Chris Kovarik 1st in Elite Men Downhill, Caroline Buchanan 1st in Elite Womens 4X and young gun Rhys Willemse fresh from injury managed a solid 7th. Here is what Caroline and Rhys had to say about there weekend....

CAROLINE BUCHANAN RACE REPORT - 2010 Australian Elite Women 4x Champion

"I was a little worried that I would not be able to race the 4x Australian Championships when in the days prior to the event there was a catastrophic fire danger and all national parks were closed. This was my 1st race in the World Championship stripes and I was so excited to wear them with pride. I have also recently signed with my new bike sponsor Commencal Bicycles International and it was the debut race on my new Titanium 4x bike. Eagle Mountain Bike park hosted a fantastic venue for the event. I was very excited to open the new 4x track with the Adelaide minister for Sport and thank him for helping create another World Class facility in Australia along with Stromlo Forest Park Canberra. I seeded in 2nd place to Sarsha in time trials leading into the 1st round of racing. Sarsha and I both won the 2 heats and we progressed into the final. I had a great start in the final and took the lead from the start to claim my 5th consecutive Australian 4x title. The next race is Shepparton VIC for a 4x MTB national round."

RHYS WILLIMSE RACE REPORT - INJURY WOES AGAIN

"Hi All, Just got back from racing the Australian Championships in Adelaide. Wow what a week!

A few days before leaving for Adelaide, I had a sore hand. I have just started riding again since breaking my femur and finger 3 months ago. Well it looks like I have broken my hand 3 months ago as well, and it hasn't healed. So I'm going to see the specialist on Thursday to organise an Operation to take a couple of floating bones out of my hand. I shouldn't be out of action for long, maybe a week or two. A broken hand wasn't going to stop me from racing the Australian Championships.

So the racing was great. I was up against world champion Sam Hill and Unit's own Chris Kovarik. My qualifying run went well with only a couple of little mistakes. I placed 5th with Sam Hill 1st and Chris 2nd.

My final run didn't go as planned. I made way to many mistakes thanks to the slippery gravel track. Sam Hill crashed out to take 5th. Chris finished 1st and I placed 7th. Still I'm not disappointment with my result. Its been a long 3 months after breaking my femur and I've had my new Ancillotti bike for only 2 weeks. Also, I was only just over 3 secs off Chris Kovarik's winning time, so I have alot to be happy about for the future.

I will let you know how things go with the hand."

Unit team dominate at MTB Nationals!

Sunday 17 January 2010

(PHOTO: Caroline on top of another podium. Courtesy Le Matelot on Rotorburn)

This weekend has seen the Mountain Bike Nationals head to Adelaide for some great weather and even better racing. Unit had some strong team athletes in Adelaide for the round, and everyone came home with great results.

Unit athlete Chris Kovarik is a legend in Australian MTB racing, and has been training harder then ever to secure some great results on the world downhill circuit. Back home for the Nationals, Chris dominated the entire field, coming in 1.5 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor, and taking the win in the Elite Downhill class. Even beating out former world champ Sam Hill, who many regard as one of the greatest Downhill racers in recent years.

Caroline Buchanan has also been on a rampage as of late, coming home with wins from every major competition she attends. Adelaide 4X was no different, and with the momentum Caroline has right now, she was never going to settle for 2nd. Caroline also has some killer new signature clothing coming out soon, so stay tuned for that!

Young gun Rhys Willemse has only recently come back from a major injury, and although he is still finding form, came out in Adelaide and qualified super fast. He held strong, and managed a solid 7th overall, which is a great result, and we think each week Rhys is only going to get faster as he gets further past his injury woes.

Elite men – downhill
1. Chris Kovarik 1:56.03
2. Shaun O’Connor 1:57.52
3. Joshua Button 1:57.58

9. Rhys Atkinson 2:00.40
10. William Rischbieth 2:00.51

Phoenix Supercross Fireworks!

Sunday 17 January 2010

Seen as we don't get the AMA Supercross Live here in Australia... (Bullshit!)... We have to rely on cruddy live lap times and twitter posts from Racer X Online... So although we didn't get to watch the race, it still sounds like some crazy shit went down!

Straight up, biggest ball breaker, Chad Reed and James Stewart collided back in the pack when Chad attempted a ballsy pass on the current points leader. Stewart was slow to his feet, but managed a 15th place, to save a couple of points for his championship. Reed however couldn't finish the race, and it now sounds like Reed has a broken hand!

So after 2 rounds of SX, Stewart has dropped the points lead to youngster Ryan Dungey, who has had a couple of astounding weeks, and Reed has basically registered no points, and is looking to be out with injury. Not an ideal position for someone has competitive and dedicated as Chad.

In Unit Team news, word from Dan Reardon's camp is that Reardon suffered a grade-two concussion and a mild strain to his right medial knee ligament in his spectacular heat-race crash at Anaheim I. He was out for Phoenix, but hopes to be back in time for a second shot at Anaheim, at Anaheim II.

Best of luck Dan, and we hope you heal up well. Next weeks racing is sure to spectacular, with Stewart on a mission to recapture the series lead!

What's up with Cam Pianta?

Tuesday 12 January 2010

G'day all

Just a quick update to let you all know whats happening with me around victoria way. Last Thursday my good mate John Buultjens (Aka Scottish John) dropped in to benalla on his way back from canberra for the night. We ate noodle box and then went down to the Benalla skate park for a little bit of a ride. John who is coming back from a lower back injury ended up taking some photos and trying to make me look good. Was a good little session lots of local guys turned up and shredded so thats always good.

Friday brought about my Birthday and besides being a year older it didn't feel a hell of a lot more different haha. but as you do we loaded up the esky with a bunch of beer a bottle of tequila, a bottle of Jack and a bottle of Jim Beam and conned my mate Mitch into driving the car and we were on our way.. Needless to say i was a mess and our group got separated like a hundred times most likely because i was running round like a kid with A.D.D. I can also add that the Unit Trifecta wallet is awesome.. Whats not awesome is that i lost it somewhere on friday night haha.

Anyways enough of story time. Later this week Cam White will be coming down my way as we have shows at the Mulwala water ski club, Cam has been doing these shows every year for as long as i've known him so it will be awesome to ride with him there.

For anyone that wants to come check it out the day kicks off at 9am on Saturday morning at the Mulwala water ski park which is just a few Km's west of Mulwala. There are heaps of things to check out there, but you know that you gotta come check out the BMX and say hello to us.

Hope to seeya there

Dan Reardon injury update

Monday 11 January 2010

Unit team rider Dan Reardon crashed hard in his qualifying race after getting the holeshot. Approaching yellow flags, Reardon lost control out of the stutters and whiskey throttled over a berm. He ended up with a grade 2 concussion and as a result of the rules will probably miss next week.

Thats a bummer dude, if only a bit of good luck could go your way! Best of luck as soon as your on the bike!

Robbie Marshall @ S.A Stadium Cross

It sounds like a great nights racing went down at the SA Stadium Cross this past weekend. Harrison came over and cleaned up in the experts, Metty was back and came home in second and Unit athlete Luke Arbon in 3rd.

Robbie Marshall was also on hand, and had a spectacular crash on the start straight in the first Main. He seems fine though except for a mammoth bruise up his thigh... Robbie is one tough guy, and will be back to strength in no time!

SX: Anaheim 1 Results

Sunday 10 January 2010

Leading into this series, all of the talk was about Aussie Chad Reed and current SX Champ James Stewart, and there is no doubt the racing at Anaheim 1 didn't dissapoint, although we would say for a few different reasons then what people expected.

Unit athlete Dan Reardon came off a strong 2nd overall in the Aussie SuperX series, and had big expectations for this series. Dan was carrying great speed through qualifying, sitting only about a second off Stewart's lap times. Unfortunately come the first heat, a racers nightmare came true for Dan as he whiskey throttled over a berm, and effectively put himself out of A1, a terrible start to a hotly contested season!

The biggest surprise was Chad Reed's bad luck at the start of the SX Main, where his front wheel came together with Austin Stroupe's footpeg, destroying his front wheel and ending his hopes of a first round vistory over Stewart. However, this left the door open for newcomer to the Opens calss, Ryan Dungey, the space to take the lead and battle it out with JS7 all the way til the end. This has to be nearly a dream start for Dungey, who will be competing in his first full Open season.

Rider Blog: Cam Pianta

Tuesday 5 January 2010

Hey guys,

So just after getting back from the Unit trip to the Gold Coast, I hung out with Cam White for a couple of more days, drank a few more tallies, then headed on my way up to Orange NSW, to help the guys at Precision Parks. My mate Darbo got me onto the team to help build the new park, so thanks mate.

Was a bloody busy two weeks with all 5 of us pulling 80+ hour weeks, but it was definitely awesome getting to see how a skatepark is put together, and how stuff works. Definitely makes you think about how much work goes into even the most simplest parks.

Also got to catch up with some mates up there like Todd, Dan and Will, and they took myself and Darbo out on the weekends for some messy messy times! Thanks for that guys, going to work the next day with epic hangovers was great.

After all was done and we got to have the first session on the park, Darbo and I headed off to sydney to go ride with Ando and Biffo at their trails, which is always super fun.

Then next up was Christmas and new years, which always feels like i never ride enough during these times, due to becoming an alcho. But we still had a couple of sweet little sessions at the local park which was good.

New years was my house, so all the lads got together and we all got super messy, and i think one of my last memories was doing shots of Patron and Silver Jack Daniel's, then somehow all of us ended up dancing in the rain outside haha.. good times

Anyways, beside that, keep riding and i can't wait for Cam's Jam! Gonna be sick

Peace guys,
Cam P

Jaie Toohey New Years update

Monday 4 January 2010

Hey guys, how you been? Hope you all had a great Chrissy and New Years. Mine was pretty good, just had Chrissy with the family, like we do every year and then on Boxing day the stretch hummer picked us up, and took us to the Boxing Day races! All day and all night party, good times. Last week i went down to Sydney and spent time there with the boys for New Years, on Darling Harbour. Whatched the fire works and stuff, and of course parties hard. Now I'm back at home doing physio again, trying to get my legs as strong and as quickly as i can. Unfortunately it will still be few weeks time until i can ride. Cam White's Jam is on Feb 6, and is probably the only place i look forward to riding every year! I'll be heading down to hang out with the boys, and it should be huge. Always good to cach up with everyone, but I will be bummed if I can't ride. Anyways, I'm out, talk soon!

Caroline kicks off 2010 in good form

Monday 4 January 2010

Caroline Buchanan has started 2010 with a bang, at the first round of the BMX UCI Champs at Nerang on the Gold Coast. Caroline spent her Christmas break at a training camp in the USA, so coming into Nerang she was feeling at full strength. Over the 3 day event, Caroline racked up 2 firsts and a second, which was enough to come out overall winner, over a packed field of high class competitors including numerous Americans who have made the trip over.

Caroline has an absolutely packed year, juggling her time between Professional BMX and Mountain Bike Championships, as well as numerous Elite Development training programs. This week she will be based on the Gold Coast with coach Wade Bootes before next weekends racing in Sydney.

Good luck Caroline!
