Unit MX Weekend Wrap

Sunday 18 April 2010

Racing resumed this week for the Australian MX Nationals, and it was nothing short of epic. A new race format was adopted, that saw each class run 4 consecutive motos! Short and fast, riders were pushed to their limits and it showed as the motos went on and guys were getting sketchier.

Todd Waters took home a very well deserved overall win in the Pro Opens, after consistently running at the front of the poack every race.

Unit MX athletes had a good day overall as well, all of the guys stepping up and bettering results from the first round.

First of all in the U19's, Luke Arbon has been looking for the podium for a long long time, and with so many wins while racing juniors, it was only a matter of time before he got one in the 19's. He ended the day with a very strong 2nd overall.

In the Lites, Ford Dale was another athlete who always seemed to be falling just short of those valuable podium finishes. He started the day slowly in Moto 1, but picked up his act with 3 consequtive 2nd place finishes. This effort would of almost been enough to win any other round, but thanks to the consistent efforts of Larsen, Bopping and Gibbs, Dale was once again relished off the podium to 4th. Still a great result for the youngster, and a promising boost of confidence going into the next round.

The Pro Opens saw all the fireworks, and with so many contenders having the skill to win, it will be an intense year of racing all round. Tye Simmonds started with a some what dissappointing result in Round 1 of 2010, but considering he was fresh back from injury and riding a brand new bike (KTM350F) it was always going to be hard for him to come out swinging. This week he really stepped up, and spent alot of the day fighting for first place. Unfortunately he didn't seem to have the speed to hold of guys like Todd Waters, and in the end he was religated to 3rd overall. Still an amazing result, and one to be proud of, Tye will still look to better himself and his results at the next round.

To the AMA Supercross, this week in St. Louis, the Unit Motoconcept team of riders looked strong with Ryan Sipes specifically standing head and shoulders above the field. He qualified 2nd in the Lites, and dominated throughout his heat, but come time for the main, and a crash in the whoops section dashed and hopes he had for the podium. Kyle Chisholm held up well in the Opens and managed an 8th overall, but still a farcry from where the team was hoping to be overall.

Racing continues next weekend for the AMA SX, and in 2 weeks time for the Aus MX Nationals. Stay tuned!
