Unit riders at Atlanta SX

Sunday 28 February 2010

Today saw Supercross head to Atlanta, Georgia for the 2nd round of the Monster Energy East Coast Supercross season.

We are excited that this season we have teamed up with Team Moto Concepts, who have a stack of super talented riders, and round after round are pushing up the front of the pack.

The Eastern Lites season is really heating up, and Unit Moto Concepts rider Ryan Sypes was holding a solid 4th place, but this round he had some bad luck and mid way through the final, while sitting with the front pack, had a fall and dropped to the back fo the field. Ryan fought hard but could only make it back to 15th.

However, Ryan's bad luck helped open the door for team mate Friese, who bettered his previous results and earned a solid 6th place in the main.

In the opens class, Dan Reardon entered the season with great speed, and alot of confidence off his 2nd overall at the Australasian SuperX series. But after his first round concussion, has missed a bunch of rounds, and now although he is back and scoring some solid results, doesn't seem to be able to crack the front pack. This round was a definite blow to Dan's confidence, although he made the main with a 9th place in his heat, was unable to put in a good performance and ended toward the back of the field.

The best thing about this series, is that it goes week for week, and every round sees a new opportunity for riders to shine and be seen. We just can't wait til next week, and hopefully Sipes and Reardon will be back in form.

You can check out the full Atlanta race report over at RACER X ONLINE.

'Rush TV' every Saturday

Saturday 27 February 2010

I am sure we can all agree, there is a huge lack of quality TV shows on air for action sports right now. Fuel TV has a few good up to date shows, but amongst all the repetitive surf shows, and 3 year old repeats of BMX P.I.G, the good stuff is hard to find.

And in regard to Free To Air programs, there is next to nothing.

Well we are stoked to give you word on an awesome show airing every Saturday at 7pm on ABC3. Rush TV is produced by our friends at Eurocam, and features cool footage across a bunch of action sports from all around the world, including loads of recent clips of the whole Unit team.

The weekly shows are also repeated every Sunday at 11am and 4pm, but you can also head to the RUSH TV WEBSITE and check out a heap of single clips, as well as some previous full episodes. So if your bored at work, it is the perfect way to burn hours and hours of down time!

Since joining forces with racer Dan Reardon for the recent Australian Super X series, Unit has begun a movement on the International Supercross / Motocross industry like none before it.

We have some huge things in the works right now, that you are gonna have to wait to hear about, but in the meantime we would like to introduce you to Team Moto Concepts! Dan Reardon will also be fighting for a podium finish in the Opens, after being back only a handful of rounds due to a season opener injury, Dan is gaining speed every round and has what it takes to be a true contender.

Kelly “MCMASSIVE” Mcgarry on Corsair!

Thursday 25 February 2010

Hey peeps

All is good with me at the moment for the last 2 weeks I have been on the road around good ol New Zealand , hittin a few spots and going to a few jams along the way .

I spent 10 days in the North Island where I went to Rampage park and Wood hill park In Auckland, rode trails in Rotorua and also pick up my new bikes from Corsair SPOKE MAGAZINE - Kelly Mcgarry Update and went to Chris B's Coast to Coast dirt jam which was pretty fun and cool to ride some new spots. Cheers for having me Chris!

Then it was a quick stop into my home town of Nelson to jam my crusty van full of pretty much all the stuff I own and head for Queenstown via Christchurch for the Bowenvale jam.

Bowenvale was all G, we hit a cool trail in the port hills called "Pop and Fresh" (haha) in the Am and went to Bowenvale for the PM, it was sick and I was havin fun, they organised a knock out style "bike battle" trick comp on a step up there. It came down to me and my mate Ramon for the top spot but Ramon crashed his 3whip and I stomped my bazza roll and took the win. Sweeet!

I'm now down in Queenstown, and have been riding Gorge Road here and heading to Stoney Hills jam this weekend and then Farm jam the weekend after.... Should be Sick!.

Cheers
Kelly

Coast To Coast Wrap Up

Tuesday 23 February 2010

FULL IMAGE GALLERY

The second backyard coast to coast dirt jump tour was on again for round two, basically a chance for keen riders to ride three backyard jump compounds not usually open for the public around Waikato, New Zealand. The weather wasn’t the best but rider determination was and a good time on and off the bike was had by all!!!

The first stop was Louis Jones compound in raglan (west coast, waikato), this was a little damp and slippery in the morning due to rain the night before. In light of this we made the executive decision to head for the raglan bowl to let the jumps dry before hitting them in the afternoon. The raglan bowl is a sweet setup with decent transitions for both mtb and bmx. Cambridge ruler Paul Langlands had it dialled with some prior knowledge of the trannys and lines available, not far behind was Local Lewis with some big airs out of the quarters and solid style. The Auckland city crew not unfamiliar to the goings on of skate parks were also cutting a few nice lines.

After an hour or so at the bowl we headed back to Louis's jumps to do a bit of prepping and carpet laying to help them dry out a bit. With many hands we succeeded and it was on! The crew were flowing the jumps nicely with smooth styles and some solid tricks considering the slippery circumstances. However no one could compete with Louis who was popping out superman seat grabs, nothings to no foot cans, barspins, heel clickers, pendulums and a bucket load of style. Louis is progressing at lighting speed at the moment. Go Louis!! We sessioned the jumps for a good few hours until the decision was made to head to the beverland jump farm. Cars were packed and off we headed to the mighty Huntly (famous for a big power station).

There were two unfortunate circumstances involving my jumps! One I had ko'ed myself, broke my hand and beat my face up in Auckland two days earlier so couldn’t ride. That sucked and I don’t recommend it. The other was it was a little windy, this was overcome with keen riders and a nine and a half meter light tower that let us ride into the night while the wind semi retired for the day.

Paul langlangs started the riding and was the one to watch all night long. Paul always looking to improve his riding and extend his skill levels. He rides his BMX at times like a seasoned FMX rider that for BMX is unique and very entertaining. Paul showed us numerous off the bike tricks, turndown threes, flip combos, and a few attempts at his latest trick (whip flips), although not landing any it wont be long time he’s hitting the pedals on landing. Kelly Mcgarry was also enjoying the jumps and started spinning and flipping to amuse him self. Kelly is committed to the bike riding cause, serious up and comers could learn a thing or two from him on both riding and how to promote yourself to the industry successfully!

Olivier Goss was the transfer magician for the night, transfering between all three lines on regular occasion, this was good to see and shows genuine riding talent. Logan from Auckland won the award for best style. His classic lofty BMX style is one that will never get old or lose any supporters.
Nick Dethridge also has a bright future ahead with rad pop and solid tricks, he also has a determination to progress every time he rides. Good to see.

Another mention worthy was a 14year old from Auckland whom I don’t know his name but decided it be a good night to start his flip account! And he did, with a couple of ejections he opened his account on about his third attempt. Yeah boy!

Unfortuantly the rain set in at Caseys place for the Sunday session so only a few slippery runs were had. All and all, weather considered she was still a fine weekend. Big thanks to Unit, spoke and transition for there support. Im off the bike for 6 weeks with a bright green cast on my hand. No doubt Ill be back with a new and improved hand ready for some more bike riding goodness in the Autumn. Cheers chris

Dane Searls Monster Jumps Progress

Tuesday 23 February 2010

Dane Searls has just headed home to Sydney after a strong result at King Of Dirt over the weekend, and while he was here, we took the chance to head out to Matt Schubring's Boonah property and scope out the location for his monster dirt jumps project.

Everything went great, and it is safe to say, we left with even higher expectations. We found the perfect downhill slope, and Dane got straight to work measuring out the course. 30ft, 40ft, 50ft and 60ft dirt doubles will grace the hillside, and after looking at the gaps, Dane couldn't help but feel a bit dissapointed in the final size, and make the call that they could definitely go bigger. But we can only work in small steps right now, considering nothing has ever been done to this kind of scale.

The next step is to get Dane up again over the next month, to catch up with Schuie and begin the basic setup work. If everything goes well, you will hopefully see the most amazing BMX dirt jump video of all time by the middle of the year! I know it's a big call, but we believe Dane has all the goods, and with the right backing, it is definitely possible!

Stay tuned...

Kain Saul @ Moto Expo

Monday 22 February 2010

The weekend saw the Australian Motorcycle Expo roll into the Gold Coast, bringing with it the latest in moto technology and some of the nations top freestyle riders.

We went along to check out the action, and were lucky enough to get the full tour courtesy the one and only Kain Saul. There were so many laughs, and Sauly knows how to turn heads! We took a camera along to cover it all, so make sure you keep an eye on th Unit Blog for a video later in the week.

One of the highlights had to be the injured Steve Mini, who was having his first go at announcing a freestyle show. Steve and Kain are best of mates, so it was a huge laugh to here Steve quizzing Kain in front of over 1000 people, about his recent relationship break up and his hunt for a new lady! hahaha

Kain also mentioned he was not going to be riding at the Nitro Circus tour, as previously announced in their press release, instead he will be performing the insane Harley Davidson backflip, on every stop of the Crusty Demons regional tour! Remember, Kane is the only rider in the world to actually land this amazing feat! So that will definitely be one to check out.

Dan Reardon Video Update

Monday 22 February 2010

Dan Reardon has been having a hard time getting the top results he was hoping for before this season started. A nasty concussion and shoulder injury has forced him to miss a bunch of rounds, and now that he is back on the bike, he is fighting to hold the speed of the top runners. But Dan is optimistic he will be up around the podium soon.

Check out this sweet video, Racer X recently did with Dan.

King Of Dirt + Richo News

Monday 22 February 2010

The weekend is over, and so much cool stuff went down. Almost the whole BMX team was in town including Cam Pianta, Dane Searls, David Girsch and of course local Nick Cooper for the King Of Dirt contest that goes down every year. We also had the pleasure of catching up with Beenleigh legend Richo, and are proud to announce Richo is the newest member of the Unit BMX Team.

Richo is known for his amazing style, and ability to go huge on any setup he rides, so we are stoked to have him repping Unit.

King Of Dirt is one of the last remaining Aussie dirt competitions left, and although the rider line up this year was incredible, the dirt jumps left alot to be desired. The huge amount of rain lately has made it hard to keep the jumps in prime condition, but the small size of the jumps in general had alot of riders wondering how the competition could possibly claim to be the 'KING' of dirt.

Colin Mackay took out the top spot, with some crazy 3 combos and 720's, while Dave Dilleward was a very close 2nd. Ryan Guettler also had a go, and in the 'best run counts' final format, was forced to give it everything and unfortunately went down on a midest 720.

Unit athlete Dane Searls was on fire, and although he couldn't  nail his last run perfect, still managed a strong 4th. Searlsy was throwing down all day, with massive supermans, flip no handers, dipped 3 whips and more.

Dave Girsch rode well, and nailed some bangers like a 720, 3 truck and more, but messed up a couple of heat runs, and missed out on the final by 1 place.

We will be putting an edit together this week of all the action that went down, so stay tuned to the Unit Blog for that to drop.

Nick Franklin Update

Saturday 20 February 2010

Yeahhh... it's been a while since my last news letter! To cap off
2009 I had a mostly great year, riding over 40 shows in 20 different
countries in front of over half a million people and all the
television, newspaper and magazine coverage that goes with it plus
still writing monthly columns in New Zealand's top moto mag DRD. But
then in November riding at the huge event in China called Race of
champions I crashed breaking my right hand. I was back on the bike as
soon as i could and came out to win the NZ FMX title in December to
finish out the year in top form which i was pumped on.

For January I started putting in some hard training preparing to
compete for a spot in Red Bull X fighters at the qualifying sessions
in California to take place in Feb as well as doing some demo's at
rounds of the NZ super X championships for Red bull when a crash on my
BMX left me with a separated shoulder and in some doubt about the
qualifier, but i managed to ride the SX series with strapping then the
qualifier was canceled anyway due to weather.

So i've taken a few weeks off to heal and am concentrating on
organizing my events calendar which really take off in March with
just a few smaller events for me till then in NZ. Then I head to Saudi
then to Peru both for Red Bull then I ride at the huge V8 supercars in
Hamilton. After that Im off to European events with a quick stop off
in Thailand to ride a X fighters demo on the way.

On the downside i have to see a specialist doctor in a week to
determine the severity and what can be done about some nerve damage i
sustained from my crash in China to my hand, i can still ride ok as i
have been but it effects me for every day uses and may do for the rest
of my life, but thats the price to ride dirt bikes! I am a little
disappointed i didn't get my chance to shoot for a spot at X fighters
but my year is still looking positive and very busy with big shows for
FMX4ever planed all summer long ( euro summer!) and also a few special
things I'm working on i'll confirm in the future.

I'd like to thanks all my sponsors and Family and friends for the unreal
support Thanks!

Chris Kovarik Thredbo Race Report

Friday 19 February 2010

We haven't been able to uncover any shots of CK at Thredbo, as most of the photographers seemed to shy away from the rain. So here is a crazy shot of the legend busting a huge 360 on his downhill bike....

Well we made the trip down to Thredbo for the 2nd round of the Australian National DH series and i was looking forward to this race, as we have the rare luxury of riding a chairlift for runs during practice.

First day of practice was friday, it's pissing down and about 8 degrees at the top of the mountain blowing a gail, mind you i was a little unprepared for the race as i would usually use a set of spike tyres for the muddy conditions but didnt bring any as i thought i would buy some at the local bike shop. The problem was they had sold out, how convienient, and i was deligated to using my dry tyres the whole weekend.

The track here at Thredbo in the dry is a little pedally in places, and there are a few sections were you have to hold speed to finish with a respectable time, and its usually around the 6 minute mark which is long compared to most, so racing it wet was going to be tough.

On Saturday we had qualifying and its still pissing down, and to make it more interesting, i didn't bring wet weather gear! So the chairlift ride was a blast!

I end up qualifying 2nd in a time of 7mins 15secs, just 3 hundreths behind my young mate Josh Button, who is using spike tyres so im kicking myself over that.

Sunday raceday, it's still pissing down and the track is so blown out and deep with ruts that the organizers tell us were only allowed one practice run in the morning for environmental reasons, what a load of sh*t.

My race run was average, and i was feeling the big dry tyres pack up in the mud a little and they weren't cutting through the ruts as nice as spikes would have, but in the end i still finished 4th.

3 weeks untill the last round in canberra at Mt Stromlo so i've got some work to do untill then!

Later!

BMX Team filming missions...

Thursday 18 February 2010

King Of Dirt is coming up this Sunday, and comps like these always give us a good opportunity to catch up with the whole team and work on a few side projects while they are in town.

First up, David Girsch dropped in from Cairns, so we got straight into filming a new edit with the youngster. Davo is a true all-rounder and can ride anything you put in front of him, so expect some big things when his edit drops in a couple of months. A trip to his home town of Cairns is in the works, and apparently there are a couole of banger new street spots, so we are pumped to see what goes down.

Tomorrow morning, trail dog Dane Searls lands in town, and let us tell you, this guy has some BIGGGG plans. Straight from the airport we will be heading out to FMX legend Matt Schubring's house to scope out some picturesque hillside land, where Dane is planning to build his out of this world dirt jumps. Dane is talking 40ft - 50ft - 60ft dirt jumps going down a hill, so if we can help make them happen, it will be freakin' insane! We will let you know how things look after the trip.

Once we get to the weekend, Cam Pianta will also be rolling into town, so I am sure we will catch up to him, and have a good ol' time before everyone preps for King Of Dirt. Should be epic. We will be covering all the action at King Of Dirt, so expect to see a dope little edit early next week.

Mary Perkins FMX Update

Thursday 18 February 2010

Hi there,

Just a quick update for those still supporting me as my career moves in a different direction. Over the past 6 months I have been very busy with organising events, speaking, study, camps and planning a wedding!

My legs are doing well but there is still a lot of healing to go in the ankle that was crushed so unfortunately I still need to take it easy on it!

I have been enjoying speaking at school events and have had some positive comments such as printed in the Taupo Times “The school was very lucky to have such an inspirational speaker”. I enjoy equipping the students with what I have learnt from my experiences.

The New Zealand FMX Championship event ‘Red Bull FMX Battle’ was a success thanks to a great partnership with Wanganui’s Raceweek organiser Leighton Minnell. The event screened on TV1 Jan 24th with a half hour segment. The goal was to promote the sport of FMX as a professional competition sport and encourage further growth.

Encounter FMX (EFMX) shows have been a real success this summer, we have been working with NZ current champion Nick Franklin and Red Bull creating top quality shows. With Levi Sherwood at most events hanging out, (unable to ride due to injury) the fans are excited to meet the internationally renowned stars and our other riders we are working with are also making their presence felt with spectacular riding.

A highlight of the summer would be racing a stockcar and taking out the win over 11 other contestants! This was my first time driving a stockcar and was given the opportunity as we performed an EFMX show at the event.

An article the BOP Times recently covered was published all around the country making the front page on a number of newspapers as there is still a lot of interest in what I am doing from the general public.

Coming up are more EFMX shows at events such as the V8 Supercars and Blues Rugby. I am back into studies this week and then April school holidays we have an Encounter Motocross Camp for high school teenagers at Tui Ridge Park and also one there in June as it is a great facility with a track onsite.

Thanks for your continued support in my activities, regards

Mary Perkins

Caroline Buchanan UCI BMX and Sports Grant

Wednesday 17 February 2010

Auckland have a brand new Supercross training track that hosted a UCI round on the weekend. Quite a few Australians went across for the series giving the Kiwis a run for their money. Sarah Walker NZ Beijing Olympian was too strong on both days taking the wins.

Results: Day 1 and 2 = 3rd

I also received a phone call from Layne Beachley today announcing that out of 340 applications from across Australia. I was one of the successful 2010 grant recipients. Every little bit counts and the foundations help brings me one step closer towards achieving my goal of winning gold at the 2012 Olympic games.

The Aim for the Stars Foundation is for female sport stars who... "Dare to Dream, Pursue their Passion and Aspire to Achieve".

Hubless, Spokeless, Chainless BMX Bike?

Tuesday 16 February 2010

Just stumbled across this on THECOMEUP, looks like some whacked out version of a futuristic BMX bike. I don't know how it could possibly be strong enough in this day and age to withstand the beating that most BMX bikes recieve, but none the less, I would still like to see one of these made and tested. Could be interesting!

MTB National Results: Rhys Willemse

Monday 15 February 2010

Hi All,

Well no lightning, but it did rain all day, and the race was on. They allowed everyone one practice run, on a drastically different course. New lines formed everywhere, ruts were deep, holes were deeper, visibility not so good, pedaling slow and tiring. They had over 50 mils of rain over the last 3 days, and this made everything nice and muddy.

My race run wasn't good. I'd be at full speed and hit a patch of mud and I seemed to nearly come to a stop. It was like I just wasn't heavy enough to plough through the mud. So I ended up with 2 small crashes and and finishing up in 12th place. Not Happy!!!

I just couldn't get excited about racing on this track. I can't wait to get overseas to race real downhill tracks. These flat tracks we are racing on aren't exciting to race.

I'm now looking forward to racing in New Zealand in March. It will be good to be back on a really exciting and technical track.

Cheers
Rhys

A3 Supercross Results

Sunday 14 February 2010

In this day and age we enjoy so many amazing things thanks to technology, live sports from all around the world, GPS streetmaps, ineternet dating (for some of you), and list goes on and on and on.... But for some retarded reason, if you live in Australia and want to watch the worlds premier Supercross series, you can either wait nearly a week to watch in replayed on Pay TV, or you can follow Twitter and Live Scoring! That's right, not a live webcast, live scoring! So you don't actually get to watch anything, just read the positions... Hahahaha what a great job the organisers are doing.

Anyway, enough whinging from me. This weeks round went to Anaheim for the 3rd time this year, and is the last round before the series heads across to the East Coast. Many of the rounds this year have been plagued by bad weather, and that track has had to be rescued many times with only hours before the gate was scheduled to drop! At A3 we had a welcome change, with the sun shining in the track in great condition.

With the exclusion of the 2 big dogs, Reed and Stewart, the series has been opened wide up, and while Ryan Dungey had an ideal start to the year, he has been pulled backed in by Hill, who is now equal in points, and to make things even more interesting, Villopoto is sitting only 3 points behind.

As I said earlier, we didn't really get to watch the races live this week, but here is the final positions in the Opens...

1. RV, 2. Hill, 3. Windham, 4. Dungey, 5. Millsaps, 6. Brayton, 7. Chisholm, 8. Byrne, 9. Reardon, 10. Wey, 11. Tedesco, 12. Blose, 13. Langston, 14. Browne, 15. Izoird, 16. Coulon, 17. Keeney, 18. Peick, 19. JT$, 20. Boni

Unit Athlete Dan Reardon had another good showing, coming home with a 9th overall. Reardon is still only just back from injury, and if can continue these results, and improving his race fitness, we should definitely see him around the podium in the remaining rounds.

For a more detailed race report, and news on the Lites, head over to Racer X Online or the official Monster Energy Supercross website

Team Injury Updates...

Friday 12 February 2010

As we head towards the 2010 season, everyone is working super hard to be fit and well prepared. Unit has an ever growing team of world class athletes now, so we thought we would get you up to date on few of the guys, and let you know how everyone is doing!

NICK FRANKLIN - Nick had a nasty BMX crash earlier in the year right after winning the Red Bull FMX Battle in New Zelanad. It was a huge bummer for Nick as it was right before he was planning to compete at the Red Bull X-Fighters qualifiers in the USA. Well thankfully we can report that Nick's dislocated shoulder has headed well, and although it has now dropped a little, he is back to 90% strength, and ready for the 2010 season of comps, demos and tours.

LEVI SHERWOOD - Every considers Levi the next big thing in FMX, however throughout 2009 he was plagued by niggling injuries and eventually required knee surgery. He has taken it super easy over the New Year period, and apparently had his first ride back last weekend! Levi says he is riding great already, and ready for the 2010 X-Fighters series which he has pre-qualified for, so we should be lucky enough to see him at all 6 rounds this year!

TYE SIMMONDS - Tye had an astounding year in the Super X in 2009, even after having a bad spill right before the beginning of the season, which nearly forced him to pull out all together thanks to a knee injury. He pushed hard all year and managed to score a very solid 4th overall in his first ever Pro Opens series. Tye has taken the off season to get a knee reconstruction, and work hard to be back to form for the 2010 Rockstar MX Nationals. We caught up with Tye today on the Gold Coast where he is working with a specialist trainer. 3 more weeks and Tye recieves his brand new KTM350F, and he says he is in awesome form and ready to tackle the MX series.

NICK COOPER - Nick had a nasty spill at the Jedi J@m in new Zealand, while attempting the crazy 360 Bike Flip. Doctors originally suspected a broken foot, but since coming back to Australia, it appears his foot was only badly sprained, and he is looking to be riding again ASAP. The Brisbane King Of Dirt is on next weekend, so hopefully we see Nick throw down there.

Cam Pianta: Hillside Dirtjam wrap up

Thursday 11 February 2010

So Wow Cam's Jam has come and passed, and wasn't it craz!

What a bloody week, so much happened and many fun times were had. Rain was a constant threat to the jam but for whatever reason it rained the day before and the day after the jam and left us with a good day for the jam.

Practice started early, even well before the crowds started turning up, i was feeling great on my bike and having a good time.. But for whatever reason i got a little cocky i think and fell pretty damn hard on my face on the last set which winded me pretty bad and left my face a mess, so i chilled out with the paramedics for a little and recollected myself.

Come jam time i pulled myself together and headed up to the roll in. My plan was just to ride the night with minimum falls, as any more hits to the head probably would have blown my eye open. So i took a back seat and just rode through the jumps without throwing anything too exciting..

I knew i had some plans for best trick, so i just held off until then, I had been eyeing up the big transfer all night and was hoping i could make something work off that.

So i had what felt like a million bitch runs at it nervous as, because it was such a long and high jump then just sent a frontflip. Straight off the bat i thought i was going to over rotate, it felt stupid slow and just wrong but as i come around the landing was there and i rode out perfect... I was soooo pumped mainly because i didn't die on it haha. I called it right there and went and stood to watch the rest of the craziness.

Dane was out there trying his new trick flip no foot can to whip, this is a seriously retarded trick and i was so pumped to see Dane go for this cause i know how much he wants to get it done and claim it, he got super close on one of them but just landed a bit off.

Jake Condron followed the transfer line up with a big big whip on it, then next run proceeded to decide seeing as he could single whip a double whip must just be as easy.. clean as butter. And who can forget Clint Bensley just manned the hell up and sent the biggest double backie ever. He was so close and unfortuently he didn't get a 2nd go as little Chris Harti took a slam that KO'ed him for a little while.

In the end i walked away with the best trick award and a giant cheque! I couldn't believe it.

Thanks to everyone that made Cam's Jam possible. A special thanks from me goes out to Cam's Parents Hess and Heather for having us dirty bmx'rs take over there house. Thanks so much for everything guys your the best.

Anyways I'm at home trying to recover from my battle wounds and gotta get ready to head to Bendigo this weekend for the Connections BMX Store jam at Eaglehawk skatepark can't wait..

Until next time..
Peace
Cam Pianta

One Year On

Wednesday 10 February 2010

You may not realise, but February 9 marked the anniversary for FMX hero Jeremy Lusk's tradgic passing. A huge loss for FMX, and for action sports in general, Lusk had an amazing impact on the fans and his fellow athletes throughout his inspirational, but short life.

EXPN have a special Jeremy Lusk feature online now, go and check it out, and take the time to remember how amazing Jeremy was as a person and on a bike.

After a couple of weeks on hiatus, Australia's National MTB series returns this weekend for round 3 in Thredbo. We are super excited about the next round, as Unit team athletes Chris Kovarik and Caroline Buchanan are both leading their respectice fields, with dominating first place results all series so far.

Chris has always been a super fast downhill racer, and is a well respectedas one of Australia's DH legends, but this year he has specifically stepped up his game, and his effort is paying off.

Caroline is a special talent, in that she races both Mountain Bike 4X and BMX Racing. Over the past 12-18 months, Caroline has been winning everything she goes near, and even with a packed calendar of riding schools, special training and multi sport race commitments, she never seems to be phased.

Rhys Willemse is another young Aussie Downhiller who has been turning heads around the world! Rhys has a new team to ride for, and fresh back from injury, he is super eager to succeed. Some strong results so far this season, Rhys has big things ahead in his young career!

Good luck to all the Unit athletes!

Hillside Dirtjam Photo Gallery

Monday 8 February 2010

King Of The Hill Dane Searls was amazing to watch on Saturday night, and the above photo proves it. That must be the biggest superman over the biggest jump we have ever seen!

For the full image gallery from the event, head over to the Unit Facebook right now. Images are courtesy Max Duff | Unit Clothing.

INJURY UPDATE*** Cris Harti was discharged from hospital 3am Sunday morning, after his absolutely horrendous slam over the 40 foot / big dog transfer line. It is an absolute miracle all he came away with was a couple scratches and a concussion. When you see the footage, you will know what we mean. Can you imagine a 40 foot gap and a 25 foot fall straight to the dirt? In belly flop position? Yea, we know, he should be nearly dead!

San Diego Supercross Race Report

Monday 8 February 2010

The skies opened this past weekend for the latest round of the AMA Supercross in San Diego. Unit Athlete Dan Reardon was back from injury, and came into the round with alot of speed. Dan is known as a race start specialist and proved this in his first race back, getting the holeshot in the first SX class heat. Unfortunately not yet back to full race fitness, Dan faded a bit and dropped back to a solid 4th, which took him straight through to the main. Reardon put on a strong effort, but rode conservatively in the end to avoid any injuries in his first round back.

Team Moto Concepts can see Dan's potential, and are working with him to ensure the best performance without taking any big risks. We can be sure to see Dan score some more holeshots next week, and hopefully maintain strength throughout the full round, landing him on the podium.

Read the full race report over at Racer X Online.

Hillside Dirtjam Results

Sunday 7 February 2010
Well, despite all the bad weather and issues with lighting and the rest, Cam White's Hillside Dirtjam went off without a hitch. So many amazing riders turned up and put on crazy show for the 1500 fans sprawled up the hillside at Cam's trails. We are working on a full highlights clip to be released this week, but in the meantime, check out the clip above of 3rd time King Of The Hill, Unit athlete Dane Searls! We didn't want to show you to much yet, so the run is just during practice, but the supermans Searlsy can do are definitely the biggest on the planet right now, and we can't get enough of watching Dane hang of the back of the bike over these 40 footers. Dane just went wild, and you couldn't wipe the smile off his face. He was busting everything out from 3 double whips, to flip no handers, and even had a go a new trick he has been working on... the flip double can to whip! Cam Pianta wound up with the Best Trick award again, after throwing a massive front flip over the 40 foot / big dog transfer, which is a hard enough jump for any world class rider, without throwing a super hard trick like a fronty in the mix! So congrats to you 2 guys on that, especially Pianta for coming back after a huge slam earlier which left his whole face looking like he had just done 12 rounds with Mike Tyson. Best style again went to Josh Stead, this guy is a trooper! He had so many big slams, and his whole face was busted up and bleeding, but he just kept riding, and aside from having amazing style, he has the big tricks as well to back it up. One huge crash was had by young Cris Harti, this kid is the toughest lad on the hill. He went for a huge downside whip over the transfer line, and basically fell from over 25 feet in the air, over a 40 foot gap, straight to the flat, landing almost ina belly flop position. He was knocked out cold for a while there, and got taken hospital. But we noticed he was facebooking this morning, commenting how hot his nurse is. So things must be ok for the legend. Next time we catch up mate, we can hook you up with a Jack and Coke. hahah cheers All in all, things went great, but just stay tuned to the Unit website this week for the highlights clip, we guarantee it will blow your mind!

Hillside Dirtjam Update: Good to go!

Saturday 6 February 2010

It's only 3 hours before practice officially kicks off for the Jam, and everything is moving like clock work. Sun is out, wind is down and riders are everywhere just waiting for the chance to go crazy tonight on the trails. It is truly amazing seeing Cam's backyard take shape from a quiet little outback pad, to a crazy, loud, loose action filled jam.

As you can see in our cruddy iPhone pic, things are nearly done and Cam is about ready to go back to bed after the biggest week / month of the year. But no lack of sleep will hold him back from tonights Jam.

Dane Searls also showed up today, Dane has won 2 of the past 3 jams, and after being injured last year, he cannot wait to get out there. Not to mention we watched him ride Darren Pokoj's bag jump a few months ago, and this guy has some epic bangers to throw down on Cam's new Best Trick set.

So if you live anywhere within a 400km radius of Cam White's house, get in your car right now and you might still catch some of what happens tonight! You don't want to miss it... All the details and location on the flyer below.

Hillside Dirtjam Eve...

Friday 5 February 2010

So here we are, chilling at Cam's place after a monster feed at the El Dorado. It has been pouring rain all avo, but it looks like the weather is clearing and the jumps seem to be draining really well. We have the best of Australia's dirt jumpers here, as well as Cory Nastazio who made the trip over from the states, ready to ride, and holy shit, it is gonna be a tradgedy if things can't go ahead. But with so many people waiting to help out, and so many local businesses and sponsors on board, this jam is gonna happen!

It has been a ball here so far, all the guys headed to Nandos today for an 'on the house' buffet lunch of some of the best portugese chicken on offer.... prepared by none other than the Dew Tour champ himself, Cam White! hahaha was a great time, and you can see all the goodness on the Cam's Jam TV show, courtesy of Unit, that is going to air April 23 on Fuel TV.

Aside from beers and Nandos, there has been alot of laughs, but everyone is on edge right now about the Jam, and fingers crossed it can go ahead. With a bit of luck, we will all wake up to good weather tomorrow and an awesome day.

Stay tuned for more updates and hopefully a killer video edit of the jam tomorrow!

Unit crew arrive at Cam White's

Thursday 4 February 2010

We have just arrived here at Cam White's Canberra house, and the jumps are looking even crazier then expected! The new 'Best Trick' jump is absolutely insane and Cam reckons it would have to be the biggest jump ever used for a best trick comp, so that is definitely gonna be a highlight of the Jam. The weather is kinda crappy, a bit windy and overcast, but isn't to much of a worry yet. A good crew of riders has already started to roll in, including Unit Team Riders Cam Pianta and youngster David Girsch, who will be having his first taste of such huge jumps. Cam and Davo even had a strap last night with the gloves, and who woulda thought Dave would even stand a chance against the big unit Cam P, but apparently the fight was pretty even and Dave even landed a big hit to Cams chin which no one could believe! hahaha good times. Fellow team riders Dane Searls and Nick Cooper are also expected to show up soon.

Speaking with Cam earlier, we can't believe how much work has gone into making this event happen, and how many great people have come on board to help out. Everyone from the local butcher to Monster Energy are helping out this year, some dude is even donating 500 or so hot dogs I heard Cam mention earlier, what a legend! haha

As the week goes on, be sure to stay tuned to the Unit Facebook and Blog, as we will be bringing you loads of updates and exclusive content from right here at Cam's. Unit will also be producing their first full 30 minute TV program to go to air on Fuel TV, April 23, so stay tuned for that!

Peace!
