From juniors to masters, in road, track, BMX, mountainbike and Para-cycling Australians continue to make an impact and the Jayco 2009 Australian Cyclist of the Year Awards is an opportunity to recognise the hard work and effort put in by everyone involved in Australian cycling.
The Awards were presented at a gala celebration being staged at the Plaza Ballroom Melbourne on Sunday 22 November.
Unit Rider Caroline Buchanan won the Female Mountain Bike Cyclist of the Year, Female BMX Bike Cyclist of the Year and was nominated as a finalist for the People’s Choice Award.
“To win both of these awards was a great honour for me and a great accomplishment as I worked extremely hard. I have had a very busy season competing in two cycling disciplines at the highest level”, Caroline said.
“2009 was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster year. I had a big low when I injured my back a few weeks out from BMX World Championships. But part of being an athlete is being able to pick yourself back up and focus on the next goal to reach the next outcome. My next goal was to win the 4x World Championships in my home town, standing on the podium in front of thousands of screaming Australian fans and everyone who has supported me over the years”, Caroline said.
A special mention goes to Rhys Willemse, who was a finalist for Junior Male Mountain Bike Cyclist of the Year Award.
