The countdown has begun for the biggest freestyle competition Australia’s East Coast has seen in years, with the highly-anticipated Unit FMX Pro Open set to explode near Rockhampton, Qld on 29 October.
Riders from around Australia who are chomping at the bit to stake a claim for their slice of the $15,000 prize pool have already registered their interest. With entries closing on Friday 30 September 2011 organisers are expecting a late rush as spots become scarce.
Among the riders already confirmed are Unit’s FMX legend Matt Schubring, Steve Mini, and a host of the Underground FMX Championship contenders.
Backed by both high-profile action-sports clothing company Unit and Red Bull, points from the contest will count towards the Underground FMX Championship final standings as well as stand-alone event bragging rights.
Unit Founder and Creative Director Paul Everest says the Unit FMX Open is already shaping up to become a key event in the Australian FMX calendar.
“There has been something of a drought in high-profile freestyle motocross contests on the East Coast over the past few years.
“While the amateur and up-and-coming riders have enjoyed the Underground Tour since 2007, contests for Australia’s big-named riders have been few and far between. The Unit FMX Open will fill that void and is designed to be a much-needed injection into the local freestyle scene.
“If we want this sport to continue to develop and breed future FMX stars, we need more contests and create opportunities for these riders to gain exposure and make a name for themselves.”
The Unit FMX Pro Open will be held at the Project FMX compound (corner of Bruce Highway and Milman Rd, Milman) near Rockhampton, Qld on October 29. Entry is $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and children under 14. Gates open at 9am, with the action beginning from 11am.
Riders still wishing to enter the contest should urgently contact Grant O’Brien on gobadirt@gmail.com or visit www.rfdmx.com.au for an entry form. Entries close 30 September 2011.
