Farm Jam 2010 went off in the hills of New Zealand's South Island at the Frew Farm. An estimated 1500 people turned up for this year's truly unique event that included FMX, MX, BMX and MTB. Riders were split up into groups of three and had three 7 minute sessions to show their stuff on the course.
''Farm Jam 2010 exceeded my expectations, the Park came together well after so much work, with the support from the likes of Unit, Red Bull, Protec, Gravity, Jim Beam and Slide. With the weather peaking out, and about a million camera angles being taken, I can't wait to sit back and watch the results. Bring on FJ2011!!!,'' said Dan Frew.
A few hiccups were had in practice. Unit rider Nick Franklin's bike got bogged on the up ramp of one of the step ups. Nick ended up fracturing his wrist in two places and elbow in one. Steve Sommerfeld also sustained concussion and a broken collarbone after clipping Dan Frew's bike mid air.
Unit rider Levi Sherwood, who has been sidelined with a wrist surgery and knee reconstruction since July, looked as if he'd never left the saddle as he threw massive Flip Combos and incomprehensibly twisted right-side-up tricks over the 90% natural-terrain course.
Even a crash and whacking his nose on the bars when a Seat grab Flip went pear-shaped in his opening run, couldn't sway his fellow riders from voting him the best rider on the day in the jam-style format.
"I only caught a couple of fingers on my grab-hole at the beginning of my rotation, and I just couldn't pull it back around in time," Levi explained, holding a pack of ice to his nose. "I was pretty lucky to get out of it so lightly. This is an awesome event though, the crowd is right into it and conditions couldn't be more perfect."
"It was awesome riding such a fun comp in my own country and can't wait to do it all again next year. Just like to say a big thanks to the Frew brothers for putting it all together and taking care of us, and also to Unit for making it all happen," said Levi.
Jake Bowen's fellow riders voted him into second place at the Farm Jam, in his first full-fledged FMX competition since 2003. Victoria's Rhys Hillier, the only other rider to Backflip at the comp, placed a solid third, with Unit rider Joe Sheppard in fourth.
Unit BMXer Dane Searls was voted as having the best style out of all the disciplines after boosting a seemingly impossible tabletop across an all-dirt half-pipe at the bottom of the dirt-jump run.
"The location, course, riders and weather were all world class, and the event went perfect. All the riders really stepped up, and the whole Farm Jam was at another level to previous years!"
This year Unit endeavored to bring all of the action to the rest of the world!," said Allan Hardy
