Unit FMX rider Levi Sherwood has crushed the competition at the latest round of the spectacular Red Bull X-Fighters series, held in the shadow of the iconic Kremlin building in Moscow’s Red Square.
After qualifying at the top of the star-packed field, Sherwood, 18, sailed past Australian Cam Sinclair in the quarter-finals, then beat out series leader Andre Villa in the semis, to set up a final round showdown with 2009 champion Nate Adams.
Both riders threw down near-perfect runs in the final around the technical course, but Levi’s indescribable extension and style saw him beat “The Destroyer” Adams, and cement his first win since his international FMX debut at the 2009 X-Fighters contest in Mexico City.
The super-flexible Kiwi was ecstatic over his win in front of 40,000 screaming Russians.
The tricky course here was just right for me,” he said. “This day will go down in history.”
Sherwood’s win boosts him from fifth to third in the overall standing behind Villa and Adams as the series moves to the next round in Madrid on July 24.
Fellow Unit rider Mat Rebeaud staged his return to competition after breaking his arm earlier this year, and managed a gutsy 10th placing, despite riding in obvious pain. Expect him to improve rapidly as he gets back into form.
